GIVE THE GIFT OF HOPE

Your $1,000 Annual Donation ($2.74 per day) for the next three years can directly impact a family struggling to pay their rent or household bills, along with many other needs while they focus on the medical treatment and care of their child who is suffering from cancer.

Our lives have changed dramatically due to the COVID crisis. Our children fighting cancer and their families have had an even greater challenge to face as they navigate their medical treatment, loss of income and other obstacles that they are facing due to the pandemic. Their child’s cancer has not gone away. COVID has made things even more challenging for the families that we serve.

HELP IS HERE

The Ashley Lauren Foundation provides immediate relief for the daily burdens the families face and bring joy and distraction to the children by providing anything they may need.

…and anything else that is needed to make a child’s life easier and bring a smile to his or her face!

OUR STORY

The Ashley Lauren Foundation (ALF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization incorporated on July 6, 2005, whose mission is to bring "Hope and Help to Children in the State of New Jersey, who have been Diagnosed with Cancer." The non-profit was founded by Monica Vermeulen, because of her passion to make a difference in the lives of these children and their families.

In February 1991, ALF Founder and CEO, Monica Vermeulen’s daughter, Ashley Lauren, was a typical, energetic 3-year-old child, adored by her family. When Ashley’s diagnosis of Wilms’ Tumor (kidney cancer) came, their lives were shattered. After losing her left kidney and adrenal gland to the disease, it had spread into her lymph system. Ashley endured many grueling years of chemotherapy, radiation, and their effects. Ashley is now a thriving businesswoman and mother, is cancer-free and lives with hope in her heart. It was in her honor that Monica began ALF.

Unlike national organizations that fund research, ALF is an independent, New Jersey-based non-profit, working hands-on with each family. The non-profit has helped thousands of children since inception (ages birth – age 21). At any given time, ALF is actively assisting over 100 children and their families.

For every parent who has heard the words, "Your child has cancer," it is a moment frozen in time. In one shattering instant, life forever changes. Coping with pediatric cancer is one of the most distressing events that a family must face. They are thrown into a world of unfamiliar and uncertain terrain.

"When you look into the eyes of a child suffering from cancer, you will never be the same."
– Monica Vermeulen

WHY WE NEED YOU NOW

  • Each year, the parents of approximately 15,780 kids will hear the words "Your child has cancer."
  • Across all ages, ethnic groups and socioeconomics, this disease remains the number one cause of death by disease in children.
  • Every day, 43 children are diagnosed with cancer.
  • 12% of children diagnosed with cancer do not survive.
  • The average age of children diagnosed is six.
  • More than 40,000 children undergo treatment for cancer each year.
  • 60% of children who survive cancer suffer late effects such as infertility, heart failure and secondary cancers.
  • The causes of most childhood cancers are unknown. At present, childhood cancer cannot be prevented.
  • ALF is continually receiving referrals of newly diagnosed children in need.
  • New Jersey has the third highest rate of childhood cancer incidence in the country.
